The Concrete Jungle Is Winning... But It Doesn't Have To

In 1900, only about 13% of the world's population lived in cities. Today, that number sits at 56%, and by 2050, nearly 7 in 10 people on Earth will be urban dwellers. Cities are, in many ways, one of humanity's greatest inventions: hubs of culture, opportunity, and connection.


However, the way we've been building them is quietly costing us something we can't afford to lose.


The Disappearing Green: By the Numbers

A 2024 satellite analysis of 344 cities across 62 countries found that 75% of them have seen a net reduction in green space over recent years. In total, those cities lost 158 million square meters of parks, forests, and vegetation to construction and urban expansion. To put that in perspective: that's roughly 22,000 football fields of green, gone.


Globally, urban green space shrank from 19.5% of city land area in 1990 to just 13.9% by 2020, according to UN-Habitat. That's nearly a third of the world's urban greenery, erased in a single generation.


And it's not slowing down.


Why Green Spaces Are Not a Luxury

Green space is easy to cut from a city budget. A park doesn't generate tax revenue. A tree doesn't file paperwork. But treating green space as optional is one of the most expensive mistakes a city can make.

The Heat Problem

When cities replace trees and soil with concrete and asphalt, they trap heat. Urban areas can run 5 to 7 degrees Celsius hotter than surrounding rural areas, a phenomenon called the urban heat island effect. A 2025 study published in npj Urban Sustainability found that this effect is accelerating fastest in low- and middle-income countries, exactly the places with the least infrastructure to cope with it. More heat means more energy consumption, more heat-related illness, and a feedback loop that makes climate change worse at the neighborhood level.

The Wildlife Problem

Cities aren't just home to people. Pollinators, birds, small mammals, and thousands of insect species depend on urban green corridors to survive and move through landscapes that humans have fragmented. When a park disappears, it doesn't just inconvenience joggers. It cuts off a migration route. It eliminates a nesting site. It removes a food source. Biodiversity doesn't exist in neat little boxes outside city limits; it threads through the spaces we leave for it, or doesn't.

The People Problem

Even if you never think about bees or heat islands, this one affects you directly. A 2024 study from Texas A&M University found that people with greater access to urban green spaces require fewer mental health services. Research has also linked proximity to green space with lower cortisol levels, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, better birth outcomes, and lower rates of depression. The Faculty of Public Health in the UK put it bluntly: safe green spaces may be as effective as prescription drugs in treating some forms of mental illness.


Access to green space is also deeply unequal. Wealthier neighborhoods consistently have more parks and tree cover than lower-income ones. So when cities shrink their green space, the burden falls hardest on communities that already have the least.


The WHO Sets the Bar: Most Cities Aren't Clearing It

The World Health Organization recommends at least 12 square meters of green space per person in urban areas. Many cities fall dramatically short. Casablanca, Morocco, has less than 2 square meters per resident. And it's not alone. In rapidly growing cities across South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America, green space per capita is often measured in single digits.


Newer research adds another layer: the bigger a city gets, the less green space each resident tends to have access to, even as the total land area grows. Cities scale up in concrete faster than they scale up in parks.


What Cities Are Getting Right

It doesn't have to be this way. Some cities are proving that you can grow and green at the same time.


Medellín, Colombia, launched its Green Corridors program in 2016, planting 8,800 trees and 90,000 plants along 30 urban corridors connecting streets, parks, and hillsides. Within three years, average surface temperatures in the corridors dropped by 10 degrees Celsius. Air quality improved. Crime rates in surrounding areas fell. By 2021, the city had introduced 880,000 trees and 2.5 million plants, and the public voted to keep investing. What started as a $16.3 million pilot is now a global model.


Singapore has taken a different approach, weaving nature into its urban infrastructure so thoroughly that the city now bills itself as a "City in a Garden." Its famous Supertrees generate solar energy and collect rainwater. The Gardens by the Bay conservatories use 30% less energy than conventional buildings. By 2024, the gardens had welcomed over 100 million visitors.


Rotterdam built water squares, plazas that double as retention basins during heavy rain, and covered over 400,000 square meters of rooftops in vegetation.


These aren't utopian experiments. They're working cities making deliberate choices.

What Can We Do?

You don't have to run a city to make a difference here. Some genuinely useful moves:


  • Advocate locally. Attend city council meetings when green space or park funding is on the agenda. Public comment matters more than most people think.

  • Support urban tree canopy initiatives. Organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation and local urban forestry programs often need volunteers and donors.

  • Choose green over grey when you can. Plant native species in your yard, on your balcony, or in a community garden. Native plants support pollinators and require less water.

  • Push back on "green gentrification." Support parks in low-income neighborhoods, not just wealthy ones. Advocate for equitable distribution of green infrastructure in your city.

  • Learn what's already there. Apps like iNaturalist help you discover and document urban wildlife. Knowing what lives near you is the first step to protecting it.


A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, and in this case, maybe one tree.


The Bottom Line

Cities aren't the enemy of nature. They can be one of its best defenses, when we build them with intention. The concrete jungle is winning right now, but the score isn't final. Every park saved, every corridor planted, every rooftop greened is a bet on a future where humans and ecosystems don't have to compete for space.
